The Emergency Management Director helps assure that the components of Orford’s emergency management system (fire and police, emergency medical service, public works, civil defense, volunteers and other groups contributing to the management of emergencies) know the threats to the community, plan for emergencies, can operate effectively in an emergency, and can conduct recovery operations after a disaster. The Emergency Management Director also is responsible for supporting all the components of Orford’s emergency management system to ensure effective operation during a declared state of emergency.

The Emergency Management Director is a volunteer appointment in the town of Orford. Under the direction of the Selectmen, the Emergency Management Director:

  1. Maintains the Emergency Management Plan and assists other departments with their specific emergency operations plans
  2. Maintains a community public shelter plan
  3. Coordinates the training and assignment of public shelter management and staff
  4. Provides information on existing and potential resources that might be useful during a declared emergency
  5. When requested: coordinates emergency operations training for all departments; coordinates test exercises of a multi-department nature; and assists departments to conduct their own test exercises

During a declared emergency, the Emergency Management Director

  1. Provides and coordinates administrative support for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC)
  2. Provides logistical support for materials and manpower as required
  3. Coordinates the rationing of essential community resources and supplies, as directed by the Chairman of the Board of Selectmen
  4. Coordinates emergency functions for community organizations and industries
